What the research says
According to the Black Dog Institute and Mission Australia study into youth mental health, 50% of mental health problems emerge by the time people are 14 and 75% before the age of 25 – the same period when most people are in education.
We know that adolescence is a critical time for delivering prevention and intervention strategies for mental health and wellbeing as health-related behaviours established during this period are often carried into adulthood. So, Hey Lemonade are working in conjunction with the NSW Minister of Education and the NSW Government to develop a younger sibling version of the app designed to support our youth – meet Hey Lemonade High.
New research by mental health organisation ReachOut conducted in September 2021 found that the number of young people reporting poor mental health or wellbeing as a result of study and stress doubled in 2021. With the added pressures of COVID-19 restrictions students reported that stress was taking a significant toll on their mental health and the fundamentals such as sleep, nutrition and their relationships. According to psychologist John Haidt, teenagers are experiencing more anxiety related to the use of social media and pressure to perform in a highly competitive world.
