How Hey Lemonade plans to help in schools

We are focused on infiltrating existing barriers by answering students call for remotely accessible, private, intuitive, technology driven support that:

  • Identifies and normalises emotions and stress

  • Builds resilience against adversity

  • Develops protective factors and coping mechanisms from mental ill-health

  • Provides users with skills and confidence to self-seek help for early intervention.

Some examples of our student focused pep talks are:

  • I’m being forced to label myself

  • I just found out there is a group chat without me in it

  • I’ve made a mistake

  • Help! My friend is talking about me behind my back

  • I feel gross in everything I wear

  • A salve for when your parents are separating

  • Backing yourself to ‘dream, dare, do’

Hey Lemonade aims to provide easy-to-access support for teens as they navigate the stresses that are specific to their generation and life-stage.

Hey Lemonade aims to provide easy-to-access support for teens as they navigate the stresses that are specific to their generation and life-stage.

We’re developing a range of pep talks that are relevant to students unique set of needs such as managing bullying, social media, self esteem, school pressure and relationships. Hey Lemonade High will offer Gen Z a way to feel supported and build their resilience, helping teenagers nip their unique set of daily stressors in the bud before they get bigger.

Teenagers are experiencing more anxiety related to the use of social media and pressure to perform in a highly competitive world.

What the research says

According to the Black Dog Institute and Mission Australia study into youth mental health, 50% of mental health problems emerge by the time people are 14 and 75% before the age of 25 – the same period when most people are in education.

We know that adolescence is a critical time for delivering prevention and intervention strategies for mental health and wellbeing as health-related behaviours established during this period are often carried into adulthood. So, Hey Lemonade are working in conjunction with the NSW Minister of Education and the NSW Government to develop a younger sibling version of the app designed to support our youth – meet Hey Lemonade High.

New research by mental health organisation ReachOut conducted in September 2021 found that the number of young people reporting poor mental health or wellbeing as a result of study and stress doubled in 2021. With the added pressures of COVID-19 restrictions students reported that stress was taking a significant toll on their mental health and the fundamentals such as sleep, nutrition and their relationships. According to psychologist John Haidt, teenagers are experiencing more anxiety related to the use of social media and pressure to perform in a highly competitive world.
